International marriages fail at higher rate than Taiwanese marriages: data

TAIPEI--The divorce rate for marriages between Taiwanese and foreign nationals was 3.6 times higher in 2001 than for unions of two Taiwanese, according to statistics published by the Ministry of the Interior on Saturday.

The average divorce rate in Taiwan was 10.7 couples per 1,000, but when broken down by domestic unions and international marriages, Taiwanese couples split up at the rate of 8.7 per 1,000 couples versus 31.5 per 1,000 for mixed matrimonies, the statistics showed.

The divorce rate for marriages between two Taiwanese and between a Taiwanese and a Chinese national has fallen slightly in recent years, but the rate for unions between Taiwanese and Southeast Asian nationals has been on the rise.
