Hotels in the eastern county of Hualien are suffering huge losses in the wake of Typhoon Megi, which caused heavy damage to the Suao-Hualien (Suhua) Highway, the only major throughway along the eastern coast.

Taiwan -- Farm takes musical approach to boost milk yields in heat
A farm in the eastern county of Hualien has pulled out all the stops, including resorting to playing classical music by Bach, to soothe its dairy cows during the scorching summer days in order to boost milk yields.
The U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSCO) has designated the Taiwan-based Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation as one of its special consultants, a spokesman for the foundation announced yesterday in Hualien, eastern Taiwan.
