New bloom
Visitors walk on the Alley of Cherry Blossoms in the Alishan National Scenic Area on Wednesday, March 22. The Forest Bureau said Wednesday that the Alishan National Scenic Area had welcomed roughly 30,000 visitors in the past weekend as the cherry blossoms season started. There are more than 3,000 cherry trees of 30 types in the national park. Approximately 40 to 50 percent of trees of the most popular type -- Yoshino cherries -- have flowered, with this variety expected to peak by the Tomb Sweeping Festival on the first weekend of April.
 
Time for tea in Chiayi
After welcoming around 100,000 visitors in its maiden show last year, the International Tea Culture Exchange Exhibition (世界搏茶會) is on again in Chiayi County, running from March 18 to 27 in the west warehouses of Suantou Sugar Factory (蒜頭糖廠).
 
Chiayi Int'l Art Doc Film Festival kicks off
"This edition of the festival is by no means an old wine in a new bottle," filmmaker Huang Ming-chuan (黃明川) said from the outset. Huang is the art director and founder of upcoming Chiayi International Art Doc Film Festival (嘉義國際藝術紀錄影展), and his knowledge spans from classic modern films to contemporary art documentaries.
 
Police are investigating an explosion in the luggage compartment of a tour bus parked outside a temple in Puzi, Chiayi County on Sunday morning, as a result of which the driver's left hand was injured.
 
Chiayi County Magistrate Chang Hwa-kuan (張花冠) has extended an invitation to local and foreign visitors alike to come visit the annual International Tea Culture Exchange Exhibition taking place in the Central Taiwan county from March 18 to 27.

Uncertain future for loss-making Alishan Forest Railway
The Alishan Forest Railway, an alpine railway that was built during the Japanese colonial era, could be suspended after running yearly losses of up to NT$300 million (US$9.3 million) in recent years, a local daily reported Tuesday.

Alishan rail to run old-style cypress carriages on Dec. 24
To commemorate 104 years of history, the Alishan Forest Railway will run retro-style cypress carriages from Chiayi to Beimen Station this weekend, the Alishan Forest Railway Branch (AFRB) said on Thursday.
 
A household registration office in Chiayi has recently helped two Japanese people locate a Taiwanese woman whom they had lost contact with for 30 years with no other clue than the woman's name.
