Yangmingshan, Kenting rank as the most visited parks in Taiwan: survey

The China Post news staff--Yangmingshan (陽明山) in northern Taipei and Kenting (墾丁) of the southern Pingtung county are the two most visited national parks in Taiwan, according to a survey released by the Cabinet-level Ministry of Interior (MOI) yesterday.

According to the MOI survey, among the total of eight national parks in Taiwan, Kenting and Yangmingshan are the most frequently visited ones each with more than 75 percent of respondents saying that they had visited the two parks before.

While the survey shows the pair are the most visited ones, it also revealed that Taroko (太魯閣) in eastern Hualien county is very popular also.

Asked to point out which park is the one people want to visit most, the top two picks are Kenting and the Yushan (玉山) National Park, the largest national park in Taiwan located on the central part of the island. It contains Yushan or Jade Mountain which is the highest peak in East Asia.

The same survey also shows that 64 percent of survey-takers said they have paid a trip to one of the eight national parks of Taiwan in the past three years.

The number rises to 75 percent if the timeframe is broadened to five years.

Meanwhile, the survey reveals that almost 90 percent of Taiwanese are satisfied with the services provided in the national parks.

Less than 7 percent of respondents said the otherwise, pointing to a lack of promotion, signage and inconvenient traffic as the main reasons, the survey said.

The survey results were based on phone interviews with 1076 randomly selected people in Taiwan who were above the age of 20 and was conducted from Dec. 25 through Dec. 27, 2011.

The four other national parks of the country are: Kinmen (金門) National Park at the offshore ex-frontline island county Kinmen; Shei-Pa (雪霸) National Park located in the central northern part of the island; Dongsha (東沙) Marine National Park on outlying Dongsha island; and the Taijiang (台江) National Park, the newest one located on southwest coast of Tainan.
