Thai suspects confess to Australian tourist killing

BANGKOK -- Two Thai men suspected of killing an Australian tourist have admitted to the crime, saying they meant only to slash her pocketbook strap and did not mean to stab her.

Police led the suspected slasher and his alleged accomplice to re-enact the crime Tuesday at the spot where 60-year-old travel agent Michelle Elizabeth Smith was killed last week on the resort island of Phuket.

A crowd of 200 people shouted angrily at the handcuffed men, accusing them of bringing bad publicity to an area that depends on tourism.

Surasak Suwannachote showed how he allegedly jumped off a slowly moving motorcycle and wielded a replica knife as he re-enacted the attack.

The suspected driver of the motorcycle, Surin Tabthong, told reporters he “made a mistake” and “things got carried away.”
