Taiwan's Jianshanpi Reservoir successfully transformed into popular tourist resort

Of the many reservoirs in Tainan which make up the major part of the Siraya (西拉雅) National Scenic Area, the Jianshanpi Reservoir (尖山埤水庫) is not the largest, but it is a very well-constructed one. Beautiful lake scenery combined with diversified species of birds and plants along the lakeside walks, as well as Jianshanpi Jiangnan Resort and lakeside villas are enough to attract visitors to stay overnight.

Jianshanpi Reservoir was completed in 1938 in Syushan Village of Liouying (柳營) Township, Tainan (台南) County. Covering more than 100 hectares, it is supplied with water from the Gueichong River.

The lake was constructed for two purposes: to provide cooling water for sugar production at the Sinying sugar mill and to provide irrigation water for the cultivation of sugar cane. It also supplies water for emergency use by industrial estates in the greater Sinying area.

After the Taiwan Sugar Corp. stopped producing sugar in 1997, the Jianshanpi Reservoir began a gradual transition toward leisure use and its water conservancy function was gradually replaced by tourism and recreation.

With the opening of the Jianshanpi Resort in 2003, the reservoir suddenly became a modern resort destination with beautiful scenery and a wide range of recreational activities.

Its enchanting scenery and leisurely mood are reminiscent of Suchou, Jiangsu Province and Hangchou, Jhejiang Province in China, and with its well-planned facilities, it has become a favorite with travelers and a unique tourist spot following its transformation.

“Touring the lake on a decorated pleasure boat” is the most popular water activity and one of the best ways to travel the Jianshanpi Reservoir. A leisurely and carefree voyage around the reservoir on one of these classic boats, taking in the delightful scenery while savoring the tranquil and relaxing atmosphere, gives visitors an unforgettable experience.

Jianshanpi Reservoir is located at 68-2 Jianan Village, Liouying Township, Tainan County. Tel: (06) 623-3888.

How to get there:

By car, take the Second Southern Freeway (No. 3 Freeway) and exit at Wushantou interchange (in Tainan), then connect to the Road No.165 going north, then turn right onto the Nan Road No. 106, and you will find it.
