Updated Thursday, July 17, 2008 0:00 am TWN, By David Hsu, Special to The China Post Nantou Railway Fair opens on July 19In a press conference held on July 14 at the Taipei Railway Station, Nantou County Magistrate Li Chao-ching said the fair is designed to promote Nantou County's tourism industry. Last year, a similar activity held during Chinese New Year attracted over 400,000 visitors. This year, the event was chosen to be held during summer vacation, from July 19 to August 24 (37 days in total – longer than last year's event). It is expected that the amount of visitors this year will be double that of last year’s. Li said visitors participating in the fair will not only be able to take the old steam locomotive to see the beautiful countryside scenery along the railroad, but can also visit fairs held at six major stations; such as the Taiwan Railroad Village at Jhuoshui (濁水) Station, Cartoon Railroad Village at JiJi (集集) Station and International Railroad Village at Shuili (水里) Station, amongst others. In total, six differently themed exhibition halls will house exhibits related to railroad travel, said Li – it will certainly be a unique opportunity for railroad fans. The old steam locomotive, CK124, which is the only working steam locomotive in Taiwan, will run on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday during the fair. Because of limited seats, visitors who wish to take the old steam locomotive have to register in advance.
