The river plays a major part in the annual Kaohsiung Lantern Festival (http://www.2009khl.com.tw/), with the lights of thousands of lanterns and boats reflecting in the softly rippling waters. The landmark festival will run from Jan. 31 to Feb. 15. ■ Singjhong Night Market is nestled in Lingya District, Kaohsiung City. Neighboring Sanduo Avenue Commercial Zone, the market offers top local snacks and renowned gourmet cuisine. ■ Huoyan Mountain is a secret place tucked into a fold in the hills above the small village of Jianshan, inhabited mainly by the indigenous people of the Rukai tribe. Perhaps the oddest sight of all is the phenomenon, quite common in southern Taiwan, caused by natural gas rising through cracks in the earth to the surface, where it ignites. Pingtung Area ■ One of the best areas to experience the full range of adventure activities in one place is Kenting National Park (http://www.ktnp.gov.tw/), a tropical adventure paradise offering beaches, surf, museums, hot springs, traditional culture, good western food, fun nightlife, cycling trails and endless adventure activities! ■ The southern city of Hengchun was built in 1873 during the late Ching dynasty. Its city wall, which is the best preserved in Taiwan, is 2,700 meters long. Travelers can begin their journey in Hengchun at the West Gate and walk to the Queen of Heaven (Mazu) Temple, the South Gate, and then the East Gate, where they can climb to the top for panoramic views of the town. |
