Kenting – An adventure paradiseBeing close to the ocean, seafood features highly on the menu and along with the traditional Taiwanese restaurants, you can find a good collection of international food; including Thai, Mexican, Japanese and even a McDonalds! We started our first morning of adventure exploring the off-road wonders of Kenting with a mountain bike journey that left us in awe of this fantastic region. We entered the main gate at Kenting National Park and made our way to some wonderful Buffalo pastures and a route that took us along endless rolling hills of open single track and eventually brought us out further down the coast overlooking the sparkling sea! Next, we swapped the mountain bikes for some serious mechanical horsepower in the form of awesome ATV Quad Bikes just along the coast towards Jialeshuei (佳樂水). Within minutes, our group of fully grown adults was reduced to a bunch of excitable kids bursting with raw adrenaline as we ripped through the sand dunes and a course that includes ramps, bridges, river crossings, tight turns and roller-coaster drops. The rush of ripping up and down the dunes with sand spraying in all directions is hugely addictive and highly recommended. Yee-haa! After somehow turning our attention away from the excitement of the ATVs, we quickly found ourselves on a jeep safari adventure, driving one of the many places on route 200 out of Hengchuen Township. The powerful custom designed 4WD jeeps took us on an excellent ride through some of Kenting’s most beautiful countryside as our driver sent us crashing through rivers, along specially made 4WD tracks, up-and-down near vertical hills and sand dunes and through grassy meadows. A highlight of our safari was a visit to the romantic “valentine trees,” a pair of trees that stand proudly on a hilltop overlooking the ocean and provide the perfect place to watch the sunset. Excellent fun! The next day, we hiked up to the eye catching Mt. Dajian (大尖山), the sharp peak that stands out behind Kenting and provides spectacular views across the bays and out to the Bashi Channel. The hills of Kenting are crisscrossed with a network of low-lying hiking trails that give hikers a glimpse of Taiwan’s rugged beauty without the need for much advance preparation. For experienced outdoor enthusiasts in search of multi-day treks through remote mountain ranges, the often-challenging trails through the high mountains represent a true wilderness challenge. We had a wonderful three days in Kenting and experienced only a taste of the adventure on offer. Southern Taiwan and the Kenting region is remarkably beautiful and we excitedly look forward to returning for more fun! | ||||||||||||||||||||
