Kenting – An adventure paradise

Taiwan is arguably the most underrated adventure tourist destination in Asia, thanks in part to its position as a global manufacturing powerhouse and a perception that the country is one endless industrial wasteland full of overcrowded cities and factories.

Step outside the bustling metropolises however and this myth is quickly debunked as towering mountains and cascading waterfalls lead to a hidden world of adventure and excitement that ranks up there with the best in the world!

One of the best areas to experience the full range of adventure activities in one place is Kenting National Park (墾丁國家公園), a tropical adventure paradise offering beaches, surf, museums, hot springs, traditional culture, good western food, fun nightlife and endless adventure activities!

Straddling Taiwan’s southern tip and bounded by the sea on three sides, Kenting National Park attracts several million visitors a year, most of them lured by its warm tropical climate and magnificent white-sand beaches. Taiwan’s first national park, Kenting covers most of the Hengchuen Peninsula (恆春半島), which sits at the confluence of fault lines and tectonic plates.

As a result, the peninsula has been pushed, pulled and twisted into a complex network of low–lying mountains, grassy meadows, steep cliffs, sand dunes and elaborate coral formations. Kenting is always warm and you can visit any time of the year. The average January temperature is 21˚C while in July it can get to a scorching 38˚C.

Despite its remarkably varied natural scenery, much of the region is overlooked by visitors – the majority of whom only relish the amusement-park atmosphere of the main tourist areas around Kenting Township.

With so many tourists clinging to these more developed spots, much of the park remains relatively quiet allowing those with a sense of adventure a wonderful opportunity to explore and experience first hand this stunning tropical paradise and some of the best adventure terrain in Asia!

One company that specializes in adventure trips to Kenting and elsewhere in Taiwan is In Motion Asia (www.inmotionasia.com), and we joined them recently to witness first hand the fun and adventure they could offer.

The main population hub and undoubtedly the park’s nerve centre is the surf strip of Kenting Township situated towards the southern tip of Hengchuen Peninsula. Kenting has by far the widest range of hotels, restaurants, shops and bars of any town in Taiwan, and during peak season becomes one big party.

The main street is lined with a myriad of souvenir stands selling everything from beach necklaces and T-shirts to trendy swimwear. There are, as well, a number of food stands that serve up a tasty assortment of snacks and local delights. During the evening, music pumps out from the many cafés and stalls that line the street meaning that you can easily spend a number of hours exploring all that is on offer.
