Updated Thursday, August 24, 2006 0:00 am TWN, By Richard Matheson, Special to The China Post Slow pace, friendly locals at Hsiao Liu ChiuBeing a small island there are naturally a plethora of water activities. Close to shore, the warm and shallow waters were teeming with colorful fish that will nibble at your legs, great for snorkeling. Swimming is awesome in the clear tropical seas but one must always be on guard to keep from being swept out into the Taiwan Strait. There are diving shops and resorts, jet ski, banana boat and water trike rentals and a glass bottomed boat tour for NT$260. Reasonably priced seafood restaurants and shops selling dried fish and squid (an island specialty) are everywhere. One pleasant surprise was Indonesian food being catered to boat workers from Indonesia. It is cheap and delicious. In retrospect, after spending a couple of days on Hsiao Liu Chiu, the most surprising thing about the tiny coral island was that I lived so close but had never been there. Truthfully, I only vaguely knew where it was beforehand. There is no shortage of attractions and things to do, the lovely views of the sea and strange coral formations coupled with the friendly locals will make you feel like wanting to stay forever. |
