Orchid Island: A vacation paradise for diving and snorkeling

The main reason people come to the island is the ocean. It boasts stunning rock formations, including Lover’s Arch (情人洞) on the eastern side, Two Lions Cliff (雙獅岩) in the north, and Dragon Head Cliff (龍頭岩) at the southernmost tip to name a few; several charming white-sand beaches (mostly on the western side); and superb snorkeling opportunities among reefs teeming with life in crystal clear water. Without any particular effort you can find yourself in the middle of a Disney movie —except it is real.

A good place to observe sunrise and sunset is Lanyu Meteorological Station (蘭嶼氣象站). To get there just go up the cross-island road and turn uphill at the only intersection. After five minutes of steep climb you will arrive at a small plateau with new facilities, as well as original buildings damaged during the war.

In Yeying Village (野銀) you will have an unique opportunity to observe original stone houses, half-buried in the ground for protection against fierce Pacific storms.

Another major cultural experience is seeing local boats—but you either have to have good timing or run into a very friendly local. As the boats are believed to possess a soul and completing one is a major social event for the whole community, the boats are usually carefully stored in sheds and taken out mostly on festivals only. If you come at a different time, you might try to ask the family where you are staying for help.

Though Orchid Island may lack the bustling nightlife of Kenting, its underdevelopment only adds to its charm. Its unspoiled coast and ocean teeming with marine life, friendly locals, and well-preserved aboriginal traditions deserve a visit. Getting there may be a bit of a hassle, but once this hurdle is gone, chances are it will be overrun by tourists and the beauty might disappear as well.
