Kinmen: A military battle ground turned idyllic tourist destination
If the spectacular backdrop lures you to forget the animosity between the neighbors then there’s the August 23 Artillery War Museum (八二三砲戰), built as a tribute to those brave soldiers of Taiwan who sacrificed their lives to save the motherland, to remind you of that traumatic past.

Kinmen: A military battle ground turned idyllic tourist destination

Close to Shuitou is the most visited tourist site of Kinmen, Juguang Tower (莒光樓), which was constructed to honor all soldiers fighting for their country. The tower looks quite impressive, built in the classic Chinese style and is surrounded by a sculpted tree-shaded garden and protected by a pair of wind lions, which is also the most enduring symbol of Kinmen.

Dishan tunnel is another interesting man-made wonder of Kinmen. It was carved out of solid granite, turning it into a safe harbor route for supply boats that also doubled as an escape route during the war.

The dimly lit interior of the tunnel has an eerie atmosphere that is heightened by the reflection of those granite rocks in the still water, so still that one may wonder that it’s actually a solid rocky cave, the water line getting obliterated in the dark.

HOW TO GET THERE:

There are daily flights from Taipei. Price varies with airlines, usually between NT$1800 and NT$2300. Check the times before hand. In Kinmen, hire cars or motorbikes for traveling around. The hotels are very basic but clean and comfortable. Recently the local government has started “home stays” in traditional houses. Contact the Tourist Information Center for more details.
