Revive the alluring momentUpon arriving at the wharf from the harbor, turn left and walk towards a staircase that leads visitors to the ultimate couples' scene on the Lover's Bridge. Lit up at dusk in blue and purple, the bridge becomes the center of attention at the wharf. The design of the bridge allows visitors to enjoy scenery on it, as well as at it from afar. With a back arched up like a half moon, the bridge seems demanding to walk up when in fact it's not. The pebble steps allow visitors to reach the highest point of the bridge effortlessly, where you can watch the colors of the warm sun and cool water merge into darkness. Before the sky turns off its light, descend from the bridge and walk on to the pier on the right. The 150-meters-long wooden walkway offers a memorable view of Lovers' Bridge and an impressive sea view. Wooden benches and steps line both sides of the pier allowing couples to embrace the scene – and I suppose, each other too. At the pier, the warmth of the night air mixed with the sea breeze brings a sense of peaceful serenity. Towards the end of the pier sits a sun shelter allowing visitors to picnic under the shade during a hot summer day. What to Eat? As the stomach rumbles, catch the boat back and stop by Danshui's Old Street to find “A-gei” – a must-eat local dish that although looks unappealing, tastes delicious! A-gei's name does not describe what it is at all, in any language. In fact, it's difficult to tell what it is from its looks too. The dish is a large squared tofu stuffed with vermicelli and minced pork; it's served with a rich, sweet sauce. First-timers don't find A-gei appetizing for its sloppy appearance, but its century-long history suggests its status. Taste it, and allow your taste buds to be pleasantly surprised. Danshui is irreplaceable because of its history, but unforgettable because of its charming personality. Be prepared to return to Danshui to explore different faces of the place. How to get there: By MRT – Take the Red Danshui Line and get off at the Danhsui MRT Station. The 30-minute trip costs NT$50 from Taipei Main Station. | ||||||||||||||||||||
