Updated Wednesday, December 2, 2009 10:25 am TWN, By Tricia Chen, The China Post Revive the alluring momentThe vibrancy and boisterous life of the town is obvious upon arriving. Welcoming visitors are street artists sketching portraits and producing other forms of artworks. Don't get too excited and get one done immediately though – the artworks might get wet during the boat trips later! Allow the beautiful experience begin at the Danshui Promenade. Strolling Danshui The Danshui Promenade, clean and wide, is filled with many shops offering local handmade instruments and traditional snacks. Several foot massage places are here too, all for affordable prices. Also lining the waterfront are countless seafood restaurants and stalls of Danshui's specialties, such as grilled squid-on-a-stick sprinkled with sesame seeds and green-lined muscles. Ice cream cones topped with chest-height tall dollops of chocolate or vanilla ice cream are perfect for two to share and only NT$20! Do be careful though, for at such a precarious height, the ice cream could come tumbling down fairly easily! Closer aligning the riverside are benches positioned facing the river suitable for short breaks – the kind that entails an 'arm-around'. The floating gondolier-like fishing boats aren't just part of the tourist scene, but are actually still used by local fishermen for getting around. Stop at one of the many sightseeing docks and take in the profound contrast of the water's tranquility versus the street hawkers' lurid enthusiasm. Towards the end of the promenade brings visitors to the ferry terminus area, where a spacious sea view platform is located. Right before sunset, chug downriver on a refreshing boat trip to Danshui's most romantic sunset spot: the Fisherman's Wharf. Soak Up the Scene on a Boat Ride Even though the Danshui river estuary appears calm, expect a bit of a “splish-splash” on the boat trip towards the Fisherman's Wharf. Although you risk being drenched by the waves, its more fun standing on the deck of the boat. Plus, with the sunset view, it's more romantic too. For those who wish to stay 100 percent dry, sit in the covered seating area on board. We recommended those prone to seasickness, however, to stay on the deck as the cool breeze eases the discomfort. Bus R26 from Danshui MRT station can also whisk you directly to the wharf in around fifteen minutes if you absolutely hate boats. |
