The two elephants placed in front of the museum are carved out of trees deformed by the typhoons.

Sanyi’s wood carvings evoke Taiwan history and culture

Exhibits from aboriginal, folk and traditional sculptures are also found. The second floor is dedicated to religious deities, Buddhist sculptors forming a major part of this section, Astronesian tribes’ art, beautiful screens and other unique traditional pieces.

The third floor displays are part of temporary exhibition and house the works of contemporary artists from Sanyi and other places. There is a sculpture class room, a souvenir shop and an art gallery in the basement.

Sanyi is a wood carver’s town from head to toe. In the lanes and by lanes there are hundreds of shops stacked to the hilt with ornate pieces, the shops near the museum and along Shuimei Street, feature some exquisite wood carving pieces. The range is quite diverse that includes religious figures, birds, animals, planters, human bust and landscape.

After an hour of exploring and haggling I return with a prize winning Buddha Head and a lingering smell of wood forever etched in my memory.

How to get there:

Take Highway 3 and get off at the Shr-ding exit. Proceed down the ramp and turn left. Go under the freeway to the light, and turn right. Head up the main-road hill and keep going till you see a ton of yellow Chinese lanterns marking the entrance to a temple on the left side of the road.

Turn left onto that small road, stay to the left, and keep going up it till you get to a parking lot. Park the car and start walking up the hill to the starting point! There are no English signs to the ultra-cool Huang Di-dian, so bring a friend who can read Chinese, or feel free to consult the locals along the way.
