Updated Thursday, July 12, 2007 0:00 am TWN, By David Hsu, Special to The China Post NCTA preserves traditional folk artsLocated at Luodong in eastern Taiwan’s Ilan (宜蘭) County, the site became a major travel destination soon after it opened on June 30, 2004. However, the inauguration of the Taipei-Ilan Freeway on July 1, 2006 has made transportation to the center more convenient. According to NCTA, the center aims to promote folk art preservation and instruction, saving the endangered cultural heritage of traditional crafts. The second goal is to reshape the development ecology for traditional arts. At the center, visitors can not only see traditional art exhibits, but also have a chance to see folk art performances and demonstrations. NCTA covers 24 hectares, and assumes functions in the pursuit of education, culture and recreation. It uses special architectural features of the park to hold folk activities. Elegant roof tiles, brown wooden railings and red brick walls are the basis for the center’s overall architecture. All of the functional parts of the buildings seem to be separate, but they create a harmonious humanistic atmosphere through the connections of wood, stone and water. The buildings of the park include the administration center, the exhibition hall, the theater hall, the concert hall, the crafts education center, the library, the folk art boulevard, the Wenchang Temple, the stage, the traditional snack bars. Traditional dormitories — the Guanghsiao Hall and the Huang Chu-jen Residence — were also reconstructed here with completely restored functions and authentic details. The scenic experience area is bounded to the west by the banks of the Dongshan (冬山) River, which is channeled into the area as the inland waterway. Visitors can stroll around enjoying traditional houses and natural beauty as the river flows by. The Forte Dong-Shan Villa in the park offers an overnight stay to visitors who like to further explore and enjoy the atmosphere of the culture garden. The theater hall sits at the center of the cultural park and is its largest building. Inside, it holds a performance hall and a drama study center. Exquisite design concepts were used to create this building, providing a place for artists to revive old memories and emotions. The concert hall has a five-story square tower with a small circular window as its architectural focal point. It is the main place for studying and performing traditional music. It has a performance hall and a music study center. The stage design of the concert hall allows performers and audiences to interact closely, bridging the gap between the audience and traditional music. Besides these two halls, there is a waterfront stage, an outdoor plaza, the Senchang Temple Stage, and an elegant waterfront-viewing platform near the traditional snack bars. The park also provides space for interaction between folk drama performers and the audience, increasing the warm feeling. |
