Fongyuan to Dongshih for cycling fanatics

GETTING THERE:

The best place to look for bicycle rentals is around the interchange between Taiwan Highway No. 3 and Freeway No. 4. This is the starting point for both the Dongfong route and the shorter, but equally worthwhile, Houfong Bicycle Path (后豐自行車綠廊).

Renting a set of wheels costs between NT$100 and NT$250, depending on what kind of bicycle you want. On weekends and holidays you might be asked to return the bikes within three hours; on weekdays you’ll likely to be told there’s no time limit. If pedaling isn’t your thing, spend a bit more and get an electric bicycle or a golf cart.

There’s no point in shopping around to save money, as almost all rental outfits charge prices set by a county government-backed business association. However, discounts are sometimes offered in mid-week.

If you have the energy, wander off the bicycle route and explore some of the small roads nearby. You will find pleasing sights and traditional architecture like this entranceway. (By Steven Crook, Special to The China Post)
