Chiayi County is well endowed with waterfalls, with multiple cascades in Fengshan's Shigupan Canyon and several others in the hilly township of Dapu. If you're coming from Chiayi City, some of the most accessible waterfalls are in Suanin Scenic Area (觀音山瀑布風景區) in Jhuci Rural Township. This narrow valley, almost a gorge, is also rich in bird and insect life.

Draped in a patchwork quilt of green across the tops of eighteen conical hills comprising a section of Yushan Mountain Range, Alishan Forest Recreation Park (阿里山森林遊樂區) has successfully preserved an idyllic atmosphere where time seems to come at a standstill.

There is a road that offers winding and weaving arteries up into and through the craggy, soaring mountains of the central mountain range bordering Chiayi and Tainan that any scooter aficionado will fall off his bike for -- Highway 18 and its main artery to Tea Mountain Village.
