Ministry denies asking banks to hasten mergers

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's Ministry of Finance denied reports it plans to speed up the mergers of state controlled banks, according to a statement posted on the ministry's Web site yesterday.

The Commercial Times earlier reported the ministry, which oversees state-run lenders, aimed to hasten consolidation, citing Deputy Minister William Tseng.
