Science parks workers on unpaid leave drops to 66

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Thanks to a strengthening economic recovery, the number of science park workers on unpaid leave has dropped to 66 in February from a peak of 128,000 in January 2009, Premier Wu Den-yih said yesterday.

Furthermore, Taiwan's three science parks — the Hsinchu Science Park, Central Taiwan Science Park and Southern Science Park — will recruit a total of 14,000 new workers in March and April, he added.

Speaking at a gathering of industrial and business leaders, Wu thanked them for their efforts to pump new life into the economy after Taiwan's unemployment rate hit an all time of 6.13 percent last January.

At that time, the industrial parks around Taiwan were reporting a total of 230,000 workers on unpaid leave, Wu recalled.

This year, the government will focus on three major policies — legislation of the Industrial Innovation Act, introduction of energy saving and carbon-reduction measures, and the signing of a cross-Taiwan Strait economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) , Wu said.

He reiterated the importance of the ECFA which he said can help link Taiwan's industrial sectors more closely with the regional market.
