Taiwan January crude oil imports rise on fuel demand

Taiwan, which imports more than 99 percent of its crude oil needs, purchased more of the fuel for a second month as an economic recovery increased fuel demand.

Shipments climbed 32 percent from a year earlier to 31.1 million barrels last month, the Ministry of Finance said in Taipei yesterday. The island's January oil bill more than doubled to US$2.4 billion, the ministry said in a statement.

Taiwan's petroleum product consumption climbed 23 percent in December from a year earlier, the Bureau of Energy said last week. Energy use rose for a fourth month in December on increased demand from factories as orders for the island's semiconductors and mobile phones increased, a report from the bureau showed.
