Updated Friday, February 5, 2010 9:51 am TWN, The China Post news staff Sheng Chang, YUF Biotech to make 'danshen'Both Sheng Chang and YUF will invest NT$5 million to establish the said production base on a land area of around 97 hectares or 293,400 pings (one ping= 36 square feet). Initially, the production base will be dedicated to growing Salvia miltiorrhiza(丹參), also known as Chinese sage or danshen, which is a perennial flowering plant in the genus Salvia, highly valued for its roots that have been used to prevent and treat heart conditions and strokes in traditional Chinese medicine, Lee said. He continued that the volume of Salvianoic acid contained in the danshen plants grown in the Hualien manufacturing base will be five to nine times the corresponding figure for danshen imports from mainland China. And if locally grown danshen plants are well received in the market, then the annual production value of condensed dansen medicines could reach NT$10-15 million. Lee said that with a history of 64 years, Sheng Chang is now the largest maker of Chinese medicines in Taiwan, commanding a domestic market share of 25 percent with an annual production of over 700 tons of Chinese medicines and over 30,000 pings of plantation area for Chinese herbal plants. The firm's share of the domestic market for Chinese medicines is expected to surge further if danshen production fares smoothly and market acceptability proves high for made-in-Taiwan danshen.
