Taiwan's jobless rate declining further

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's jobless rate is believed to have declined further in the last month of 2009 thanks to increases in temporary job openings and signs of an economic recovery after a yearlong recession, officials predicted Friday.

The Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) was scheduled to unveil last December's unemployment rate later that day.

Economic planning officials said December's unemployment figure should be lower than that of November as the government's job creation and other employment-boosting programs have gradually borne fruit.

The unemployment rate in November edged down 0.1 percent from the October level to 5.86 percent, marking the third straight month that the jobless rate saw a decline.

"We believe the jobless situation improved still further in December, " said an official of the council for Economic Planning and Development.
