Updated Friday, January 22, 2010 9:55 am TWN, CNA Six new industries expected to create 450,000 more jobsOfficials of the Council of Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) said the six emerging industrial sectors, which include the green energy, tourism, biotechnology and electric vehicle sectors have been listed for priority development for 2010, as part of efforts to rev up employment. CEPD officials quoted the International Labor Organization (ILO) as saying that the ILO has been participating in global climate negotiations in order to support coherent policies that will buffer the negative impact of climate change on the labor market, create opportunities for green jobs and facilitate the transition to sustainable economies, enterprises and employment opportunities. By 2012, the number of people working in Taiwan's green energy sector will be nearly double the figure posted in 2008, CEPD officials forecast. CEPD tallies indicate that output from Taiwan's green energy sector reached NT$160.3 billion (US$5 billion) in 2008, employing some 16,000 employees. It is estimated that the workforce in this sector will top some 47,500 people by the end of 2012, the officials said. The combined output of the six emerging industries stood at NT$2.2 trillion in 2008, with a total workforce of 784,000 people. By 2012, the output is expected to have increased by NT$1.17 trillion, with 450,000 new jobs created, the officials estimated. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
