Updated Sunday, November 29, 2009 11:30 am TWN, CNA Information Technology Month 2009 opens in Taipei: TCAVice President Vincent Siew and Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-shiang addressed the opening ceremony, during which they also awarded winners of awards for outstanding performance in IT applications this year. Siew hailed the annual Information Month, the 30th of its kind, as Taiwan's most prominent and important trade fair and paid tribute to the late Presidential Adviser and Minister of Economic Affairs K. T. Lee for his remarkable and far-reaching vision, which led to rapid progress in Taiwan's hi-tech development. The vice president also touted public attention to the government's campaign to build a “smart Taiwan,” saying that the purpose of the IT Month fully coincides with the campaign's cause. IT Month runs through Dec. 6 in Taipei before it will be moved to Taichung and then Kaohsiung. According to TCA, several information and communications technology (ICT) giants, including Acer, Asus, Chunghwa Telecom, BenQ, Microsoft, HP, Sony, Samsung, and Lenovo are eager to display their latest IT hardware and attract buyers for their products at the trade show. Sales of IT products have been hit by the global financial crisis over the past year, but there are signs of recovery this year because of the launch of Windows 7, touch panel, 3D screen and Netbooks -- which are the hottest products in the market. E-book readers, a popular Christmas gift choice and one of the most widely discussed products of this year, will also be showcased by several companies, such as Chunghwa Telecom, Fujitsu, Sony, BenQ, and Aiptek International, TCA said. The computer association is the biggest industry association in Taiwan. It organizes not only IT Month, but also Computer Taipei, the world's second largest and Asia's largest IT exhibition.
