Updated Tuesday, November 24, 2009 11:17 am TWN, CNA China's top IT official visits Taiwan for a cross-strait forumLou Qinjian and his group of more than 60 industry insiders and scholars are here to take part in the sixth Cross-Straits Forum on Industrial Standards in the Information Industry, seen as a platform for Taiwan and China to cooperate on research and development on technical standards. During the forum, to be held Tuesday and Wednesday in Taipei, the two sides will exchange views on TD-SCDMA (time division synchronous code division multiple access), AVS (audio and visual standard), mobile storage, IPTV (Internet protocol television) , green power, semiconductor lighting, and high definition flat panel displays. The organizers, who have played down Lou's visit, denied that the Chinese delegation's visit was related to any procurement plan for 2010. They insisted that Lou is not leading a buying delegation or bringing a loaded checkbook to place orders. Industry experts suggested, however, that shares of Taiwanese companies working to develop TD-SCDMA applications are likely to benefit from the Chinese official's visit. China fully ushered in the 3G era in May, which the analysts believe will generate substantial demand for TD-SCDMA terminal and network equipment as TD-SCDMA is China's 3G mobile telecommunications standard. The forum is being hosted by the nonprofit China Communications Standards Association (CCSA) and the China Electronics Standardization Association (CESA), both of which Lou serves as honorary director, and Taiwan's private SINOCON Industrial Standards Foundation. Taiwan's Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Hwang Jung-chiou will deliver a speech at the forum Tuesday. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
