3 companies shortlisted for Taipei 101 fireworks

A Taipei 101 executive said the three finalists are private companies, and the sponsor will be decided by the end of November at the earliest, according to the United Evening News.

The executive did not identify the finalists, but he disclosed that they are from the electronics industry and the consumer product sector respectively, according to the paper. The fireworks will run for the same length of time as last year's, at 188 seconds, and the budget will be no less than last year's NT$30 million, the executive was cited as saying.

According to the paper, Taipei 101 started its New Year fireworks display in 2004. The first show, which was sponsored by the building's management itself, lasted for only 30 seconds and cost NT$10 million.

But in 2005, Sony became the sponsor. The display that year lasted 128 seconds with a budget of NT$20 million.

Sony sponsored the display again the next year, that saw the length extended to 188 seconds and the budget increased 50 percent to NT$30 million.

The government's Tourism Bureau became the sponsor in 2007 and 2008. While the duration of the fireworks remained at 188 seconds both years, the budget dropped to NT$21 million in 2007 and then went back up to NT$30 million in 2008.
