APEC to impact economies: experts

According to Chiang Chi-cheng, deputy director of the Chinese Taipei APEC Study Center (CTASC), the APEC summit this year has greater significance because of the many problems, including the global economic downturn, the spread of influenza A (H1N1), climate change and energy issues, that have been evident in 2009.

These problems brought a lot of uncertainties to the region, and the leaders at the APEC summit would have to come up with some responses, Chiang said at a seminar.

To avoid being marginalized, Chiang suggested, Taiwan should channel more attention and resources to adapting to the structural changes in the region.

Chiang also noted that the summit in Singapore will focus on economic and trade issues, particularly how to ensure economic growth that is both environmentally friendly and considerate of the society.

He added that one of the highlights of the 2009 APEC summit Nov. 12-14 will be U.S. President Barack Obama's participation for the first time.

Kuomintang Honorary Chairman and former Vice President Lien Chan is expected to represent Taiwan at the summit as President Ma Ying-jeou's special envoy. Foreign Minister Timothy Yang said last week that the Taiwan envoy has been selected and an official announcement will be made soon.
