Protesters call on Apple, Wintek to stop exploitation

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Representatives of laid-off workers from Wintek Corp. rallied yesterday in front of the office of Apple Computer Taiwan, requesting the firm to ask its contract manufacturer Wintek to scrap its decision to lay off over 600 employees.

In an open letter issued to Apple Computer, the protectors asked the firm to request its contract maker Wintek to drop its decision to lay off employees in Taiwan and mainland China, to improve its working conditions, and to allow a third-party labor group to investigate manufacturing operations at plants, and asked for direct dialogue between Wintek labor representatives and Apple Computer officials.

The protesters called for Apple Computer to respond positively to the above-mentioned four requests by the end of May, or they will launch a campaign to “Say No to Bloody Apple.”
