One in three unimpressed by Chinese tourists: survey

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A total of 33 percent of the respondents to a recent poll said they are unimpressed with the influx of Chinese tourists, according to the results of the government-commissioned survey released Saturday.

The poll, conducted by the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission under the Executive Yuan, found that only 24.9 percent of the respondents said they had a favorable impression of the Chinese tourists who have arrived since the government opened its doors wider to visitors from China.

The other respondents said they had no firm perception about the Chinese tourists.

Meanwhile 48.3 percent of those polled said the current cap of 3,000 Chinese tourist entries per day should remain in place, compared to 28.7 percent who said they would favor raising of the daily maximum.

Taiwan began its relaxed policy on Chinese tourist arrivals July 1 last year as part of the government's efforts to boost the economy.

The poll, which is conducted on a regular basis to gauge public opinion on the government's policies toward China, also found that 53.9 percent of the respondents said they are satisfied with the outcome of the third round of recent talks between Taiwan and China. The talks saw the conclusion of three pacts on financial cooperation, crime-fighting cooperation and regularly scheduled direct cross-Taiwan Strait flights.

However, 39.9 percent said they had no knowledge of the pacts.

On the question of a joint statement issued at the end of the talks in Nanjing, April 26, on giving Chinese investors more access to the Taiwanese market, 49.6 percent of those polled said they support the idea, compared to 28.4 percent who expressed opposition.

The survey was conducted April 29-30 by phone among residents of Taiwan aged over 20. It collected 862 valid samples with a margin of error of 3.34 percentage points and a confidence level of 95 percent.

On the flip side, I doubt many people in foreign countries would find Taiwanese tourists impressive in any way. This survey seems to serve no purpose. Visitors in a foreign country will usually seem different from the locals. They are tourists! Of course they're not likely to be like the locals. When Taiwanese tourists go visit other countries, without a doubt they look a bit out of place.
