CAL offers 85 percent discount ticket promotion

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- In a bid to vie for a slice of the voucher pie, China Airlines (CAL), Taiwan's largest air carrier, yesterday kicked off a promotion campaign by offering a discount of up to 85 percent for 100 flight tickets per day through the end of January, allowing consumers to purchase the tickets using the NT$3,600 worth of shopping vouchers given to all nationals on Sunday.

Immediately after the online booking system was opened at the mid-night of Sunday, as many as 1.7 million people tried to scramble for the 100 tickets, but all the tickets were sold out within one second early yesterday morning.

Under the campaign, consumers will be allowed to use the NT$3,600 vouchers in exchange for round-trip economy-class tickets for 30 regional flight routes mostly from Taipei to Japan and Southeast Asia.

CAL officials said that over 70 percent of lucky consumers reserved tickets for flights to Hokkaido and Tokyo of Japan, and Bali Islet of Indonesia for sightseeing.

Meanwhile, travel agencies are also gearing up to scramble for patronage from consumers using shopping vouchers, offering special sales like a 6-day trip to Thailand for only NT$3,600.
