Updated Monday, January 19, 2009 4:08 pm TWN, The China Post news staff Dozens of fugitives nabbed while collecting vouchersIn Keelung alone 13 fugitives were nabbed, giving the Keelung police station the best record in apprehending wanted criminals. The fugitives were caught after visiting distribution centers where their households were registered and providing valid proof of identification, both actions required for collecting vouchers. Police say many of those apprehended either didn't know they had outstanding arrest warrants or didn't expect such efficiency from the police. Fifty-nine year-old fugitive surnamed Hsu said he “regretted showing up” to collect his shopping voucher after being nabbed at a distribution center in Luchu Township, Taoyuan County, of northern Taiwan. In the central city of Taichung, on duty police at voucher distribution centers arrested fugitives surnamed Peng, Chen and Wang after the three identified themselves. Thirty-five year-old Female drug trafficker surnamed Tu claimed that she didn't know she was on a wanted list because she never received a notice from the Chiayi District Prosecutors Office. Police took Tu into custody after she identified herself to a voucher distribution center in Chiayi City. Twenty-two year-old Hsu returned to his hometown in Taitung from Hualien, both in eastern Taiwan, to receive his voucher only to be arrested before even receiving the payout. Hsu was wanted for stealing eight water heaters but he told police he didn't know he also earned an arrest warrant. His voucher was later consigned to his mother. Some knew of the risk but chanced it anyway. After his arrest, 63 year-old Huang of Chiayi told police he showed up to collect his voucher because he didn't think his charge of document forgery warranted an arrest. In the southern-tip township of Hengchun in Pintung County, fugitive Su said the threat of prison time simply couldn't deter the temptation of free money. “I just want to use the vouchers to buy some daily necessities,” Su told police after being nabbed at a voucher-distribution station.
