Vouchers must be spent locally: CEPD

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- China-based Taiwanese business people, who are also entitled to get shopping vouchers worth NT$3,600 next month under a government plan to boost spending, must spend the vouchers in Taiwan, the head of the country’s top economic planning agency said Wednesday.

Speaking at the Legislative Yuan, Chen Tain-jy, chairman of the Cabinet-level Council for Economic Planning and Development, said that if the Taiwanese business people receive the vouchers in China, they would have to use them after they return to Taiwan.

Chen also said the government will try its best to prevent counterfeiting so as to protect retailers’ interests. He added that shop owners will be provided with relevant information to verify the authenticity of the shopping vouchers.

The Cabinet has come up with an NT$85.7 billion (US$2.6 billion) budget plan for the shopping voucher project, which is pending legislative approval.

Under the project — aimed at spurring consumer spending and boosting the slumped economy — shopping vouchers will be distributed to all of Taiwan’s citizens, regardless of age or income levels, before the 2009 Lunar New Year, which falls on Jan. 26.

Under the project, each citizen, including newborns and naturalized foreign spouses, will get NT$3,600 in shopping vouchers from Jan. 18.

The vouchers will remain valid until Sept. 30, 2009.
