Drug pushers solicit businesses for vouchers

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- When all business operators ranging from department stores to hoteliers and street vendors have geared up preparations to win a bigger slice of the NT$82.9 billion fund in the consumer voucher plan, drug pushers are unlikely to miss the boat.

Officers at the Juifan police department in Taipei County have discovered that some drug peddlers have already started soliciting business pegged to the NT$3,600 shopping coupons to be distributed to every citizen by the government for the purpose of stimulating economic development.

They learned of the plan from a couple of drug users they recently detained.

The addicts of illegal drugs confessed that they normally have to take high risks by stealing in order to get the money for their drugs. They now eagerly anticipate the arrival of the unexpected sum of money.

But some drug suppliers and pushers have agreed to give them NT$3,000 cash to buy the drugs if they turn in their vouchers, which will be regarded as cool cash.

Some others offer a “barter trade” to give them three packs of heroine — worth NT$1,000 each pack — upon receiving the NT$3,600 vouchers, said the drug users.
