State-run sugar company expands organic farming

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- State-run Taiwan Sugar Corporation (TSC) has decided to expand the scale of its organic farming operations in response to strong public demand, a press released issued by the company said yesterday.

The public enterprise will expand the land area devoted to cultivating organic rice from the current 25 hectares to 113 hectares, which is expected to increase annual output to 450 metric tons.

At the same time, TSC will also extend its organic fruit and vegetable cultivation to several townships in the Kaohsiung and Yunlin areas, through which it hopes to expand its output to 300 metric tons of produce each year, the press release said.

Currently, the company maintains organic fruit and vegetable farms totaling 3.4 hectares of land in Huwei township in Yunlin County, Shanhua township in Tainan County and Nanzih district in Kaohsiung City.
