Vice economics minister to attend APEC meeting

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Hsieh Fa-dah will attend a ministerial-level meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum slated for May 31-June 1 in Arequipa, Peru, ministry officials said yesterday.

Hsieh will participate in the annual event on behalf of Minister of Economic Affairs Yiin Chii-ming and will take part in discussions on a variety of issues including global food trading and regional economic integration, the officials noted.

Hsieh and an accompanying delegation was scheduled to leave for Peru the following day.

During his visit, Hsieh will also donate computers and various other equipment sufficient for the establishment of three APEC digital opportunity centers, according to the ministry.

Building facilities of this kind is an APEC project set up by Taiwan to implement its recommendation at the APEC Leaders’ Summit in Brunei in 2000 that efforts should be made to bridge the digital divide among APEC members.
