Hsieh vows major constructions if voted Keelung chief

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Potential Keelung mayoral candidate Hsieh Li-kung (謝立功) said yesterday that if the Kuomintang were to nominate him and if he wins the election, he will work on launching more major construction projects in the port city to drive local growth and development.

Hsieh currently serves as an advisor on the National Security Council (NSC).

Hsieh on July 8 issued a statement, rejecting media rumors that he was planning to run for Keelung mayor, but on July 22, the NSC advisor said that if the KMT were to nominate him, he would accept the nomination. Hsieh also confirmed that he had transferred his household registry over to Keelung, a move necessary for him to run in the race.

The NSC advisor said that his relationship with Keelung adds up to more than two decades.

Hsieh explained that although he wasn't born in Keelung, he has spent a considerable amount of time in the port city. Hsieh said that he studied for his bachelor's and master's degrees, landed his first job, bought his first house, got married and saw his children born in Keelung.

When asked if President Ma Ying-jeou had spoken to him personally about drafting him for the election, Hsieh said that the president gave him a lot of encouragement.

When asked about the election, Hsieh said that he considers himself to be a humble person and an individual who is willing to learn.
