CEC officially proclaims Ma president-elect

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Central Election Commission (CEC) yesterday officially proclaimed opposition Kuomintang candidate Ma Ying-jeou and his running mate, Vincent Siew, as the winners in the March 22 presidential poll.

After correcting an error in the vote count, the Ma-Siew ticket was confirmed to have received 7,659,014 votes, while the ruling Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate Frank Hsieh and his running mate, Su Tseng-chang, won 5,444,949 votes, the CEC said in a statement.

The 290-vote error, which did not affect the outcome of the election, was caused when a block of votes was incorrectly given to Hsieh at a polling station in Sijhih, Taipei County, the CEC said.

According to the original vote count released March 22, the Hsieh-Su ticket won 5,445,239 votes while the Ma-Siew ticket garnered 7,658,724 votes.

Meanwhile, the CEC said the Ma Siew and Hsieh-Su campaigns will receive NT$229.77 million and NT$163.35 million in campaign subsidies, respectively, payable within three months.

According to the Presidential and Vice Presidential Election and Recall Act, any group of candidates that win more than one-third of the vote receive a subsidy of NT$30 per vote.
