Bus chartering enjoys brisk business with candidates

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Charter bus operators had a heyday yesterday.

They raked in quick bucks as supporters of the two presidential candidates had to charter buses to go to where they were supposed to start Super Sunday rallies across Taiwan.

An estimated two million people around the island took part in the island-wide rallies to cheer Ma Ying-jeou, Kuomintang candidate for president, and his Democratic Progressive Party rival Frank Hsieh.

“We have no buses to be hired out,” one operator lamented.

Otherwise, more money would have been made, for thousands of supporters waited for transportation to go to Taipei, Kaohsiung and other major cities of Taiwan.

As a matter of fact, charter bus services were all fully booked prior to the last Sunday before the presidential election, scheduled for next Saturday.

“All we could do,” an operator in Taipei said, “was to phase in runs in the already full schedule to satisfy the demand.”
