Mrs. Hsieh campaigns for DPP candidate in Taipei

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Mrs. Frank Hsieh mingles with the crowd easily and comfortably.

She did so with her husband in the county of Taipei yesterday.

A former classmate of Frank Hsieh, his wife is used to campaigning. In particular, she is loved by people with a lower income.

Yu Fang-chih was graduated from prestigious Taiwan University with a law degree like her husband. But she fits into any setting for electioneering.

“She would talk to people about daily routine,” an aide said. “People love her for that,” she added.

Many vegetable vendors gave her horse radish, which is called “cai-tau” in Hoklo, a homophone for “luck.”

Supporters often send candidates horse radish as gifts to wish them luck.

After accepting the present, however, Mrs. Hsieh would pay for it in cash. “She makes it a rule to make it up for the poor people,” the aide added.
