TAIPEI, Taiwan –– Frank Hsieh, Democratic Progressive Party candidate for president, has

no problem with his throat. It rarely gets sore.

Why?

Thanks to a tincture Mrs. Hsieh requires him to drink from time to time every day.

Loquat essence, a Chinese herbal cure for the sore throat, is mixed in water to make the special libation. It has to be warm when it is drunk.

When Hsieh reached out to take a glass of water while haranguing at a campaign rally last Saturday, his wife slipped a cup of the warm soothing beverage into his hand.

He drank, of course, and was refreshed enough to continue his long campaign speech without any more interruption to drink water.

Every morning over the past three weeks, Mrs. Hsieh never let her husband leave home for campaign rallies without drinking up a large cup of loquat essence solution.
