Ma Ying-jeou doesn’t cough from stress any longer

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Apparently, Kuomintang presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou has recovered from a bad cough.

He didn’t cough any more yesterday.

Dr. Chan Chi-hsien, Ma’s campaign manager, said the KMT standard-bearer suffered what is commonly known as an allergic cough, thanks to stress and overworking.

The coughing irritated his Democratic Progressive Party adversary Frank Hsieh when they debated on television last week. Hsieh ridiculed Ma.

“As a matter of fact, the candidate would be fully recovered if he had some more rest,” said Dr. Chan, a former superintendent of the Chi Mei General Hospital in Tainan.

Ma drank a lot of boiled water. “His throat is OK now,” said a close aide.

“We are glad he speaks without any trouble,” the aide added.
