Beijing is considering a special passport for Taiwanese

A Hong Kong-based media outlet reported that Beijing was mulling a pilot program that would allow it to issue passports for citizens of the "Taiwan Special Administrative Region (SAR)."

On July 28, Super Media reported that a scheme for the "Taiwan SAR passport" had been recommended to the President Xi Jinping to "solve the Taiwan problem" within his term.

In reply, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council said that Republic of China (R.O.C.) nationals were not permitted to take a mainland Chinese passport.

If they do, they may not only lose their R.O.C. passport identity but also the rights and may also have criminal responsibility or have to pay a fine, the council said.

The Mainland Affairs Council rejected the premise of treating Taiwan as an SAR, stressing that it the R.O.C. was a sovereign state.
