Rain will last until Thursday: weather forecast

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecast Sunday that the current wet weather will continue until Thursday due to a hovering front and the southwest monsoon, with showers or thundershowers expected around Taiwan.

Because of the front and monsoon, the island would receive showers or thundershowers on Sunday, said CWB forecaster Lin Po-tung (林伯東), noting that the bureau has issued an extreme heavy rain warning to the areas south of Taichung, Miaoli County and mountainous areas in Hualien County.

Northern Taiwan, Yilan County in northeast Taiwan, mountainous areas in Taitung County in the southeast, and the island groups of Penghu and Kinmen were within the range of the CWB's heavy rain advisory.

Lin said there would be less rain in southern Taiwan's mountains on Sunday compared to the previous day, but people in other parts of the island should be aware of sudden downpours.

The rain will gradually weaken on Tuesday and Wednesday, but Taiwan will not get dry weather until Thursday, Lin forecast.

"People would have to wait until Thursday to have a chance to see sunlight," he said.

On Sunday, the temperatures would reach 30 degrees Celsius in southeastern Taiwan, 30 degrees in the south, and 24-28 degrees in the rest of the country, according to Lin.

Meanwhile, meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said the unstable weather will gradually stabilize on Tuesday when the front, which he called "Plum Rain Front," will move to the sea north of Taiwan.

Taiwan will be away from the direct impact of the front on Wednesday, Wu predicted. However, he advised people to avoid outdoor activities in places prone to disasters after several days of downpour.
