Ex-President Chen seeking to attend fundraiser

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Former President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), who is on medical parole, has filed a request to attend an annual fundraising dinner in Taipei on Friday, according to Taichung Prison.

Chen is also hoping to give a 10-minute non-political speech at the fundraising dinner, which is hosted each year by the Ketagalan Foundation, a non-profit organization that Chen founded, the prison said Thursday.

It did not indicate whether it planned to give permission for the former president to attend but was expected to announce its decision Friday morning.

The former president was allowed to attend the event last year but was not permitted to address the gathering.

The Ketagalan Foundation is currently chaired by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Gao Jyh-peng (高志鵬), and its executive director is Chen Chih-chung (陳致中), son of the former president.

In 2008, shortly after Chen Shui-bian's tenure as president ended, he was convicted of corruption and sentenced to 20 years in prison and a fine of NT$250 million (US$8.25 million).

He was serving his sentence at Taichung Prison until January 2015, when he was released on medical parole due to declining health, and has since been living in Kaohsiung.
