"China Taipei” designation unacceptable: MAC

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Monday called "completely unacceptable" Beijing's labelling of a Taiwanese table tennis team competing at a tournament in Jiangsu "China Taipei" (中國台北).

"We will not accept this unilateral name change move. Taiwan is definitely not a part of mainland China," MAC Chairwoman Katharine Chang said at the Legislative Yuan.

Her statement comes after Chinese state television introduced members of Taiwan's table tennis team as "China Taipei." Under current international regulations, the island competes under the designation "Chinese Taipei" (中華台北).

Observers of Chinese media said that this was "a deliberate signal" sent by Beijing, noting that before April 10, Chinese state television had consistently used "Chinese Taipei" to refer to Taiwan's national team. This started to change on April 11, when it began to use the designation "China Taiwan," observers said.
