Haima forecast to bring heavy rain to Taiwan

TAIPEI--Typhoon Haima is expected to bring heavy rainfall to eastern Taiwan on Thursday and Friday although it will not hit the island directly, a meteorologist forecast Tuesday.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, Haima was 1,400 kilometers east-southeast of Eluanbi on Taiwan's southernmost tip, moving at 26 kilometers per hour in a west-northwesterly direction toward Luzon Island in the Philippines, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

With a radius of 220 kilometers, the typhoon was carrying maximum sustained winds of 184 kph and gusts of up to 227 kph, CWB data showed.

A sea warning for Typhoon Haima is highly likely to be issued Wednesday morning, the bureau said.

Judging from its scale and path, Haima will pose a threat to waters south and east of Taiwan, but its radius will not hover over land, WeatherRisk Explore Inc. President Peng Chi-ming said.

Moisture carried by the typhoon's peripheral currents, however, could gradually reach Taiwan's eastern regions and the Hengchun Peninsula in the south late Wednesday and cause heavy rainfall there on Thursday and Friday, he said.

Meanwhile, Cheng Ming-dean, director of the CWB's Weather Forecast Center, said in a Facebook post that Haima had developed a new eye wall that was even stronger than the old one as of Tuesday morning, a sign that the typhoon will continue to strengthen.
