Heavy rainfall forecast for Northern Taiwan

TAIPEI--Taiwan's weather remained warm Monday, with heavy rain expected in parts of northern and northeastern Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau said.

Typhoon Sarika, which will not directly affect Taiwan, is currently in the South China Sea and moving toward Vietnam and China. Another typhoon, Haima, could continue to strengthen over the next few days as it heads toward the Philippines, Cheng Ming-dean, director of the CWB's Weather Forecast Center, said in a Facebook post.

Haima's peripheral currents are likely to affect Taiwan's weather later this week as the storm moves closer, Cheng said.

Wu Der-rong, a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, expected Haima's peripheral current to interact with winds from the southeast and cause heavy rain in Taitung and Hualien counties in the east and Pingtung County in the south on Thursday and Friday.
