Taiwan marks World Sight Day

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan celebrated World Sight Day (2016世界視覺日) on Oct. 13, an international event organized in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness of sight-related problems.

To address growing concerns about the possible health effects of 3C products (computer, communications and consumer electronics), Alcon Taiwan (愛爾康大藥廠) and the Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan (TOS, 中華民國眼科醫學會) have jointly worked out a number of guidelines to help promote healthy eyes for people in different age groups.

"This is the 12th straight year for Alcon Taiwan to collaborate with the Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan in advocating eye-care through the annual World Sight Day event," said Shalav Modi, general manager of Alcon Taiwan, highlighting the company's commitment to helping people see better. Modi also called on local people to develop the habit of receiving regular eye health examinations to prevent avoidable eye diseases and eyesight problems.

Dr. Woung Lin-chung (翁林仲), president of TOS, said it was common for people to ignore or to be ill informed about eye-care. He stressed the importance of working with Alcon Taiwan to formulate eye-care guidelines for teenagers, young adults and the elderly. Woung hopes the guidelines can remind people to take better care of their eyes, now that 3C products have become indispensable in their daily lives.

Focus Global Attention on

Blindness and Vision Impairment

The "Enhancing Sight, Enhancing Lives" campaign is a timely precursor to global advocacy efforts for improving eye health. World Sight Day — the annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment — is held on the second Thursday of October each year. This year, it took place last Thursday, Oct. 13.
